The Big Island of Hawaii is so big that it could hold all the other islands put together. The entire island has only a the population of 150,000 people and a have much less of tourism compared to Oahu or Maui; This is basically a rural community, but you will easily find good restaurants, bars and night activity. The most appealing characteristic of Big Island are the sleepy, and unchanged for a century, old towns all over the island.
The few resorts are in the less beautiful areas, built on the barren lava flows of the Kona coast to catch maximum sunshine.
Thanks to the Kilauea volcano, which has destroyed roads and even towns, and spews out pristine beaches of jet-black sand, the Big Island is growing its southern shore inching out to sea.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is absolutely compelling:
- it includes Mauna Loa as well as Kilauea,
- you can explore steaming craters and cinder cones,
- you can venture into the rain forest,
- at times you can even approach within feet of the eruption itself.
The summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea have:
- the clearest air on earth
- astronomical observatories
When the tradewinds drop, the Big Island is prone to a choking sulphurous haze known as " vog ."
More of the ancient Hawaii survives on the Big Island than anywhere else in the islands of Hawaii.
Puuhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park preserves a "place of refuge" for kapu -breakers and defeated warriors, and there are further temples north along the Kohala coast, while Waipio Valley, where Kamehameha spent his youth, remains as lush and green as ever.

one bus daily links Hilo and Kailua, and there is organized bus tours go to specific attractions. Other public transportation is almost nonexistent
Hawaii Travel. In a word or two It will be a fun time when I make my trip out to Hawaii for a vacation. Hawaii can be thought of as a destination but I tend to think of it as a fantasy dream. For years I have been seeing commercials and print about the beautiful islands. But what could I do with no money? not much. Well I finally saved up enough money to make my Hawaii travel a real Hawaiian vacation and I will be traveling first class. What a way to start a vacation, flying first class in a double-hulled 757. I think I will be able to wear my high heels considering how much leg room is available in first class. What to do? Where to visit? What sites to see? What activities to participate? These are all apart of the complicated decisions that stress a newbie traveler such as myself.
